Florida Elementary School to Become an Art Museum

April 22, 2005 -- Beginning May 2, 2005, the Art Room at Binks Forest Elementary School in Wellington will be transformed into a "mini-museum," with the school's art department hosting works on loan from area artists. The project will give students a chance to visit a "real museum" without leaving school grounds.

The purpose of the "mini-museum," which will be in place from May 2 to May 10, is to teach students about proper museum etiquette, the job of a curator and other aspects of a museum.

An opening reception will be held May 5, from 6-8 PM, and the public is invited and encouraged to attend. The reception, which will be held in the art room at Binks Forest Elementary, located at 15101 Bent Creek Road in Wellington, will give visitors a chance to view the works of art, meet the artists and interact with the students.

"I'm very excited about the museum project,' said principal Keely Spinelli, who called it "a natural extension of what we have been doing with our fine arts rotation for the past five years." During that time, she explained, students at Binks Forest Elementary have been provided with supplemental art history education, allowing them to gain an understanding of and appreciation for some of the greatest artists of all time."This is a real opportunity for our students to expand their knowledge base in a fun and exciting way," Spinelli added. Students will visit the museum during school hours, and will be encouraged to ask questions and offer comments.

The Museum Project is being made possible in part by the generosity of area artists, who have graciously agreed to loan their works to the school. "We can't thank the artists enough for their help," said Spinelli, who added, "We have such a wealth of talent in this community, which I think people will see when they come to our museum."

As part of the project, participating artists will be on hand to speak to the students about their work, their lives and the careers they have chosen for themselves. "This adds another important element," said Spinelli, "because it shows the students that art is not only fun, it can be a source of income as well; and having real artists who earn a living doing what they love might just help an aspiring artist follow his or her dream."
