LearntobeHealthy.org an eLearning site created by the Susan P. Byrnes Health Education Center, has added new mental health curriculum for K-6 students. The innovative activities, or kits, were designed to teach children the importance of healthy decision making, bullying prevention, positive self-esteem, and accepting themselves and those around them for who they are.
Studies show that mental health problems can affect one in every five young people at any given time. And, according to the U. S. Department of Justice, 160,000 children miss school every
day because of a fear of being bullied. The games, activities and supplemental materials found at LearntobeHealthy.org give students the tools they need to establish healthy relationships
among their peers.
The site'ss K-3 suite of activities, titled Seaing Me for Me, uses entertaining undersea characters such as Scuba Sam and his sidekick Pozzi T, the Positive Turtle, to teach students to
embrace uniqueness and treat others with respect.
The mental health kit for grades 4-6, The Power of Me, guides students through a virtual carnival with games and rides hosted by LearntobeHealthy.org characters, Ima Driver and Hector. It
features nine activities to reinforce earlier lessons and address issues such as conflict resolution.
The site also encourages collaborative learning around the globe with Cyber Simon, who can be decorated by students to include their national or state flags, traditions that keep them
healthy, and what makes them unique. Through the use of NICENET.org teachers can connect with other teachers around the world who are doing the same activity. Teachers can exchange
projects, giving students the opportunity to practice acceptance and learn about other cultures.
These activities, along with pre- and post-tests and other games, teach K-6 students important lessons about self-esteem, bullying, acceptance, respect, and healthy decision-making. All
of the activities found on the site are designed to meet Pennsylvania and National Health Education Standards.
