April 23, 2005 -- On May 9th and 10th, Houston-area students will share their writing talents with an audience at the 2005 Writers in the Schools (WITS) Young Writers Reading Series. The
young writers range in age from elementary to high school, and each one has been chosen to read because of his or her ability to create powerful poems, stories, and essays. The students,
many of whom are considered "at-risk", will share writing that will make the audience laugh, cry, and marvel their talent.
Participating students have worked under the guidance of a professional writer for an entire year through the WITS program. The May 9th reading will feature elementary writers and May
10th will feature middle and high school writers. Both readings will be held at 7:00 p.m. at The Menil Collection, 1515 Sul Ross. The events are free and open to the public. Poet Claudia
Rankine, who is the author of four collections of poetry, will offer words of inspiration and congratulations to the students.
The children participating in the Young Writers Reading Series are selected in a juried competition, and their works will be published in a bound anthology. The students represent schools
and community centers from across the city and receive awards and prizes in recognition of their success. The Young Writers Reading Series began in 1989 as a way to celebrate the
achievements of the city's most gifted young writers.
The 2005 Young Writers Reading Series is sponsored in part by The Menil Foundation, the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County, Copy.com Starbucks, and Kat's Chow. For more
