October 152006 Book Release for New Christmas Storybook The Broken...



Diane Zuber is an elementary music teacher and 2005 recipient of the Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship grant. She originally wrote the story as a musical play. Artist Mary Firtl'ss colorfully detailed artwork transforms the story into a children's8217;s book with a mid-twentieth century nostalgic quality. Granger, IN October 11, 2006 -- The new Christmas storybook, The Broken Doll, written by Indiana author Diane C. Zuber and illustrated by Indiana artist Mary Meehan Firtl, will be released Sunday, October 15, 2006. Author Diane C. Zuber is an elementary music teacher in the Penn-Harris-Madison School District, and a 2005 recipient of the Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship grant. She originally wrote the story as a musical play for her students to perform and produced it in a director's8217;s script/score format for the grant.South Bend resident Mary Meehan Firtl graduated from the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and works as a graphic designer for Saint Mary's8217;s College. Her colorfully detailed artwork transformed the play into a children's8217;s book with a mid-twentieth century nostalgic quality. The book retains its original music through an accompanying CD narrated by the author.Northern Indiana music students, Penn H. S. Orchestra Director Lavon Oke, and Northpoint Elementary Principal Christine Stephan participated in the recording of the CD.



The Broken Doll is a charming children's8217;s Christmas story emphasizing the importance of a family's8217;s love over having expensive toys under the tree. Like many children, Audra begs for every toy she sees. Due to a recent lay-off, buying any toy is out of the question. Audra and her parents discover valuable lessons resulting in their best Christmas ever.Combining a playful rhyming style, beautiful illustrations, a touch of fantasy, and deep insight into the heart of a child, author and illustrator merge talents to create this endearing story.

Author Diane C. Zuber related that as she wrote the story, she tried to keep in mind the children and adult audiences to allow the story to speak to all.She also included the accompaniment tracks for each song so after children learn the songs, they can perform them for their families.
