Springfield School District Takes 14 Firsts at Pennsylvania JuniorAcademy...

In a powerful demonstration of scientific research, 18 Springfield students competed in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Meet, which was held May 17-19 at Penn State University. To reach the finals, all 18 students had to place first in the regional competition. Then, among a field of 2,200 students from across the Commonwealth, 14 of the 18 Springfield students received Firsts in the finals.

Sophomore Nicole Melso won in the Astronomy category and received a $1,000 cash prize for the top Earth and Space presentation, A Study of Quiescent Flicker Behavior in a Dwarf Nova. Sophomore Hayden Dahmm won the Director'ss Award for his presentation in the Ecology category, It'ss Always Good to Have a Fungi Around.

Other investigation topics which took Firsts included: in Behavioral Science, Does Age Influence Taste Buds and Identifying Levels of Polyphony: Percussionist v. Wind; in Chemistry, Lycopene: Organic or Non-Organic; in Physics, Which Gas is the Ideal Insulant Against Heat, The Effect of Changing Dimensions of DaVinci'ss Parachute, The Study of Aerodynamics and Vehicles, and How Does the Temperature of a Magnet Affect Its Maximum Load; and in Zoology, Do Dog Treats Influence a Dog'ss Heart Rate.

According to School Board member Keith Black, The academic rigor involved in selecting these topics, running the experiments, forming hypotheses and defending them to a panel of judges is noteworthy. This challenging program would not exist without the efforts of E.T. Richardson Middle School teachers, Monica Braconnier and Jim Conlin. The program started at the middle school. When the first group of students moved to Springfield High School, the program followed them. We now have students from grades 7 to 10 participating.

Springfield'ss Directors of Teaching and Learning, John DeAngelis and Monica McHale-Small were instrumental in the students's participation and accomplishments.
