Wheeler Peak Online Academy Opens Doors



For parents looking for a more flexible educational environment, the newly established Wheeler Peak Online Academy could well serve as their child'ss ticket to effective education. Based on a program that we'sve established to connect non-traditional students with public school resources, the Wheeler Peak Online Academy offers K-12 individualized, online education to New Mexico students at no cost to the family.



Program Director, Traci Filiss says that this Online Academy is the first element of the new Technology Center authorized by Cimarron Municipal School District voters in House Bill 33. Clearly there has been a mandate by our community to provide alternatives to brick and mortar schools. Located in Eagle Nest, New Mexico, Wheeler Peak Online Academy is currently working with local and regional school districts to provide diversity in the educational experience and to better serve the needs in our rural communities.



Wheeler Peak Online Academy is committed to providing quality, virtual education for home-school students, traveling athletes, as well as students who have struggled, for whatever reasons, in traditional 'sbrick and mortar's school settings. It is an excellent way to provide a quality education to children whose parents are looking for an alternative to the traditional experience. says Filiss.



Global Student Network, one of the providers of the virtual curriculum used at the Academy, supports New Mexico State learning standards and is delivered entirely over the Internet. We did a nationwide search for the best Online Curriculum for New Mexico'ss students, and we are very fortunate to be working with the value, service and quality leader for online courses. Students enrolled at Wheeler Peak Online Academy complete the majority of their coursework online while having the flexibility to customize their school year calendar with 24/7 year-round access. Teachers are certified and highly qualified in the subject areas they facilitate and the director has a Masters of Technology Education in Distance Learning Curriculum and Design.

I think the potential for the Wheeler Peak Online Academy is enormous, noted Dr. Annette Johnson, superintendent of Cimarron Municipal Schools. She recognizes that students throughout New Mexico can benefit from this alternative educational delivery method.



The program will likely attract students that have, for whatever reason, felt disenfranchised from the school system, Johnson said. We are excited to be able to meet the needs of students and their families.
