Capella University Faculty Member Authors The Elements of Disaster Psychology

Dr. James L. Greenstone, an adjunct faculty member in the Harold Abel School of Psychology at Capella University (www.capella.edu), an accredited,* fully online university, has authored The Elements of Disaster Psychology: Managing Psychosocial Trauma -An Integrated Approach to Force Protection and Acute Care. The book, which is being published by Charles C Thomas - Publishers, will be available in February 2008. It is designed to aid in practical, day-to-day, on-the-scene disaster response, intervener survival, and crisis intervention.

"The Elements of Disaster Psychology: Managing Psychosocial Trauma focuses on those basics that are needed by crisis and disaster responders in the field," Dr. Greenstone said. "The lists, procedures, suggestions, and guidelines are field-tested and directly related to field situations."

According to Dr. Greenstone, the book is designed for use in the field by both first and second responders to disasters. He also said it is appropriate for disaster psychology training classes, police training, Medical Reserve Corps training, as a text in emergency management courses, and as a supplemental text in theory courses.

Dr. Greenstone has taught forensic psychology, ethics, clinical interventions, theories of psychotherapy, clinical supervision, psychology and the law, social psychology, psychopathology, crisis intervention, and other courses at Capella University for the past seven years. He also served as the police psychologist for the Fort Worth, Texas, police department for 11 years. In total, he has 40 years clinical practice experience, 30 years experience in law enforcement, and is currently a deputy constable with the Tarrant County Precinct #4 Constable's Office in Fort Worth. Dr. Greenstone has authored numerous books, chapters, and papers on crisis intervention, mediation, tactical emergency medicine, psychology, police hostage and crisis negotiations, and other related topics.
