May 23, 2005 -- A Jacksonville, Florida, man is trying to raise money to fight a drunken driving offense after he says police stopped him for nothing but being in the wrong part of town
at the time.
He's listed an auction on eBay, offering lists of DUI jokes, but being careful to note that DUI is a serious and dangerous crime and shouldn't be taken lightly. He's offering a Buy It Now
price of just $5 or you can submit your own Best Offer of course, you can purchase as many Buy It Nows as you want!
The man is working to raise more than $2,500 in legal fees to cover JUST the preliminary hearing from others with a sympathetic ear or have personally experienced how even the most
well-intentioned officers can make mistakes and cost the innocent thousands in legal bills.
The suspect can't even find out his chemical BAC content until the preliminary hearing so it could be 0.00% and he's spent the $2,500 on lawyer fees for NO reason.
What's more is the breathalyzer didn't register ANY alcohol in his breath, and the police complaint claims he was stopped because he wandered slightly into the adjoining lane of a
two-lane, ONE-WAY street with a broken white line -- meaning passing is LEGAL -- then corrected back into his own lane. The police followed him for not more than a block.
The legal bills and other expenses have totalled more than $2,500 so far, and it's likely to climb even further -- for a crime not committed! The officer apparently was so sure of it he
ignored the clean breathalyzer, not considering the financial havoc he was about to cause.
He's 26, well-educated, with a bachelor of arts degree. He's a professional working in television, but laid off a few months ago when new management took over. Times are tough, and he
says he's only been able to land a few freelance gigs in the past few months.
