North Carolina Authors Powerful Story Reinforces The Importance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Anatomy premiered on September 24th at the Durham Arts Council Theater in Durham to a packed house which included victims of spousal abuse. Jaisun McMillian is the playwright and director of the stage production which features Emelia Cowans, (Geraldine) and Kelvin Allen (Danny) as her abusive husband. According to McMillian, both Cowans and Allen gave incredible performances. There are things about this story that are raw and dark, but we had to tell the story, says McMillian. This is the kind of compelling work we must continue to do if lives are to be changed.

During October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the play returns to the Durham Arts Council stage on for an encore performance Sunday, October 22 at 4:30 p.m. and on Thursday, October 26 at the School of Communication Arts in Raleigh at 7:00 p.m.

Counselors from local domestic abuse agencies, Interact, the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCCADV) and the Durham Crisis Response Center will be on hand for each performance. The Anatomy of a Woman Abused is by far the most extraordinarily written and produced play I's8217;ve seen in 20 years, says Laura Hilton, Director of Communications for Interact. The actors brought the scenes to life's8230;generating responses from the audience, including me, as if we were actually witnessing the abuse as it happened. I would encourage every adult, including young adults to see and experience this play and in the process, learn about domestic violence and how it impacts everyone.
