Massachusetts Governor Patrick Launches Energy Efficiency Campaign...



Issuing a proclamation calling on all Massachusetts citizens to make reductions in the amount of energy we use to collectively reduce global warming, Governor Deval Patrick took a step towards energy efficiency by changing the bulbs in his own office from incandescent to Energy Star-qualified compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and kicked off an afternoon of light-bulb changing throughout the State House. Joined by Senate President Therese Murray, House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, and Energy Secretary Ian Bowles, the Governor said, Our commitment to cost and energy savings starts right here - quite literally - in my office. We will be making these changes in offices throughout the State House. It'ss a small start, but such small starts add up to big savings - in our pocket books, and for our environment. Once the official remarks were concluded, teams of young people from City Year, under supervision of the staff from the Bureau of State Office Buildings, went to Executive and Legislative offices, changing the bulbs in table and desk lamps.



Today'ss changing of the bulbs at the State House (1000 CFLs for 1000 incandescents) will save taxpayers $15,000 a year, cut electricity consumption by 128,000 kWh'ss, and reduce carbon emissions by 56 tons. The energy efficiency efforts at the State House - a process that NSTAR Electric has been undertaking for months in the common areas of the building - also helped to launch a major, year-long campaign throughout New England aimed at encouraging consumers to Start Small, Save Big. The six-state campaign, sponsored by myenergystar.com as part of the Northeast Energy Star Lighting and Appliance Initiative, emphasizes the importance of all of us taking small steps towards energy efficiency.



NSTAR'ss Penni Conner, Vice President of Customer Care, said, If every one of us in New England changed just one bulb in our homes - that'ss 5½ million households - we'sd save a total of more than $45-million a year in energy costs and the CO'sup2;.equivalent of taking 39,000 cars off the road. If everyone does just a little, the energy savings and environmental benefits really add up quickly.



Adds Timothy M. Stout, Vice President, Energy Efficiency Programs for National Grid, Replacing incandescents with CFLs is one of many low-cost steps all of us can take today to save electricity and to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases. Such actions build on the Commonwealth'ss leadership in energy efficiency and its proactive stance on addressing climate change.
