It looks like most Americans have not taken mother's advice to "wash your hands" to heart, at least as far as restaurant meals are concerned.
A new survey on consumer attitudes towards hand washing before eating shows that only one in three Americans clean their hands before eating in a restaurant. The figure is the same for
adults as well as children, whose parents claim they just don't think about hand hygiene when taking their family to a restaurant.
But the survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, also reveals that a majority of consumers who patronize fast-food restaurants--one of the most popular types of dining establishments
frequented by consumers--have a strong preference for the inclusion of hand sanitizing wipes with meals. They would also be more likely to patronize those fast-food restaurants that made
hand sanitizing wipes available.
"We were surprised by the results of this survey," says Nadine Brewer, Consumer Insights Manager, Nice-Pak Commercial, manufacturers of hand and surface wipes and the company that
commissioned the study. "We were also pleased that these consumers feel strongly about restaurants facilitating hand hygiene when they are eating 'on the go.'"
The survey, which was conducted among adults ages 18+, found that 84% of respondents strongly agree with the statement, "I wish fast food restaurants would give their customers
individually packaged, disposable hand wipes with their drive-thru meals" and 62% say they would be more likely to patronize restaurants that offered them.
