Celebration, FL April 19, 2008 -- Sunday, April 20, 2008, marks the nine year anniversary of the Columbine High School shootings, a senseless act of violence which left the people of the United States paralyzed in a state of grief and shock. The Maximized Living's doctors have been asked to speak in Columbine on this tragic anniversary and have launched a website targeting the issues that harm our society today: maximizedlivingcolumbine.com (http://www.maximizedlivingcolumbine.com/)

Unfortunately, the Columbine tragedy shares the month of April with yet another - the one year anniversary of the Virginia Tech University shooting, which claimed the lives of 33 human beings, one of whom was the shooter himself, on April 16, 2007. Overall, there have been 41 school shootings in the U.S. since 1996, resulting in a total of 170 wounded students and teachers and 113 deaths.

There are so many questions as to how such horrifying events can occur that one hardly knows where to begin. However, targeting the root of the problem, which is the mental health of the gunmen, is a necessary question to a necessary answer in order to bring an end to violence in our schools. Maximized Living examines the issues of mental health and our children today. Not only do these doctors want to make a difference on a global level, they want to help society understand how the treatments available today may be more harmful than helpful to our children.

In their article discussing the Virginia Tech shooting, The Economist focuses on the stability of the shooter, stating that "teachers and University police were already worried about his volatile behavior and violent writings. He was recommended for psychiatric treatment but, because of the cracks in the state mental-health system, never received it."

In 2001, NBC covered the release of Columbine shooter Eric Harris' diary, reporting that it was filled with writings of his hatred for people and his relish for violence. NBC also reported that Harris was medicating himself with the anti-depressant drug Luvox, a drug that according to a lawsuit filed against Luvox in response to the shootings, allegedly caused Harris to become manic and psychotic. Upon his death, the Coroner's office in Jefferson County, Colorado, found a therapeutic amount of the drug in his system.

As recently as this past February, yet another school shooting occurred at Northern Illinois University, where medication and mental-health were cited as the possible reason behind the gunman's shooting spree. While these tragedies in our schools continue to happen, it seems that the cause of unstable health has not been answered. A group of Doctors who are outraged at this lack of understanding have taken a step forward to tell the world "This isn't good enough."

In recognition of the lives lost in school shootings and in honor of the anniversary of the Columbine High School tragedy, Maximized Living doctors will take to the Columbine campus to speak out on the effect of lifestyle on today's youth and how to start the healing process in their minds and bodies.
