Atlantas6th Annual Walk from Obesity Aims to Save Lives and Fightfor...

Help us walk from obesity and towards a better future on Saturday, September 26, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Piedmont Park! Every year the Walk from Obesity raises money through Walk sponsorship and donations to further their mission to bring together all who are affected by obesity and to draw national attention to the need for awareness, treatment, and advocacy initiatives. This year, the Walk will be hosted by Dr. J.K. (Ken) Champion, head of the Videoscopic Institute 's8211; a Marietta and Atlanta bariatric surgery (http://www.drchampion.com/) practice. Other local and national volunteers participating in the Walk event include patients, obesity specialists, nurses, community workers, healthcare professionals, the healthcare industry, concerned citizens, and many more.

Dr. Champion is host of the Atlanta Walk from Obesity and has devoted his career to helping people fight morbid obesity. He says people affected by the condition need to know that there are ways to get help. 's8220;Obesity is a widespread problem with more than two thirds of all Americans being overweight or obese. The Walk from Obesity is a fun, family-friendly event to help bring together the millions of people affected by obesity and draw attention to this important cause.'s8221;

Registration to participate in the Walk is $25 in advance and $30 the day of the Walk; those 12 and under can register free of charge. You can register at the official Walk from Obesity website, or at the event itself. Walkers in the event can raise money through sponsorship by friends, family, co-workers, local organizations, and/or businesses. In addition to walker income, funds are raised through local business event sponsorship, matching gifts, and corporate contributions

Each year the Walk continues to grow. Total donations from 2007 exceeded $2.3 million and in 2008, more than 12,000 participated in 70 locations across the United States. All money raised goes to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) to continue research and education 's8211; vital parts of advancing obesity treatments and raising national awareness.

Fitness for a Better Future Contest!

This year, Walk from Obesity Atlanta is giving away 8 weeks of free personal training sessions with certified personal trainer, Daryl Madison of Lifestyle Fitness to one Walk participant. Registered walkers/runners can enter the contest by submitting their story and telling why they are ready to make the change to a healthy, fit lifestyle. Walk from Obesity

The Walk from Obesity was established to raise awareness of the obesity epidemic and to support initiatives focusing on prevention, education, research, treatment, and advocacy. Proceeds from the Walk benefit the independent educational and research initiatives of the ASMBS Foundation and the Obesity Action Coalition. Walkers raise money by asking friends, family, and co-workers to sponsor them. In addition to walker income, funds are raised through sponsorship, matching gifts, corporate contributions, and other fundraising activities.

Dr. J.K. Champion is a bariatric surgeon based in the Atlanta, Georgia area. He is a nationally recognized expert in videoscopic general and thoracic surgery. Offering procedures to help Atlanta obesity (http://www.drchampion.com/supportgroup/#new) sufferers and those from across the nation, Dr. Champion is the founder of the Videoscopic Institute of Atlanta PC. He is board-certified by The American Board of Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Champion is also a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. He currently holds an academic position as Clinical Professor of Surgery at Mercer University, and has served as Director of Endosurgical Education at the Emory Endosurgical Center, Emory University School of Medicine.
