A cool idea has been launched to help women going through menopause. The Chillpack by CoolSistas is a torso-length cooling aid to help women deal with hot flashes and night sweats
associated with menopause. Each day an estimated 4,000 American women begin menopause. Random hot flashes and/or night sweats affect 75%-85% of menopausal women within the first two years
after their periods stop. For the uninitiated, night sweats are hot flashes that seem to ramp up during sleep, leaving the woman, and often her partner drenched and exhausted by the end
of the night.
Chillpack creator LaRhonda Whitmire came up with the idea to help a good friend who had tried all kinds of hormone replacement creams, herbs and known alternatives and found that some
were dubious from the start and others worked initially and then lost effectiveness over time. The only thing that seemed to work was instant cold. 's8220;We were hanging out one
Thanksgiving weekend when my friend Juli raced across the room, opened the freezer, raised her shirt and leaned into the ice cube bin. As she stood there 's8216;flashing's8217; the
Frigidaire, I wondered how many women were dealing with the symptoms of menopause in this same way.'s8221;
This prompted LaRhonda to create the Chillpack, a torso-length combination of two flexible blue gel-packs slipped inside a soft terrycloth slipcover. The size and weight of the Chillpack
make it particularly comfortable for lying next to the body when a woman is reclining. Women can 's8220;pre-cool's8221; their sheets with the Chillpack before going to bed or keep it
folded beneath their pillow so they can take it out when they need it. It can also be laid across the lap and chest while watching television or reading. Each CoolSistas Chilllpack weighs
approximately 6.5 lbs and contains two identical gel-packs. Chillpacks retail for $37.00, plus tax and shipping.
About CoolSistas
LaRhonda Whitmire founded her company CoolSistas on the motto: the world needs cool women. 's8220;Historically, the connotations associated with menopause are less than flattering. Since
we were a start-up as opposed to a mult-national corporation, there were no deep pockets available to fund expensive focus groups. I personally had a lot of questions about how women
would respond to the product. I tried to gather a group of menopausal women for a kind of ad hoc discussion group before attempting to launch the Chillpack. I remember approaching a
number of women in my community about being a part of the group and having them tell me that they didn's8217;t have that problem, even as their faces were flushing and they were pouring
with perspiration. I learned that women are so different in how they deal with this issue. Some women are very candid and up front in discussing it while others may be feeling a little
diminished if they admit to struggling with the symptoms. This is one of the reasons CoolSistas decided to market the Chillpacks over the Internet. It gives a level of anonymity. When you
think about how much a woman has accomplished by the time she reaches menopause, the extraordinary joys and challenges that compose a life, the wisdom that's8217;s been gained, it makes
women more interesting, more appealing.
Of course the irony is that at a time when women are starting to feel more relaxed and in control of their lives's8212;a sense of mastery and confidence in their career capabilities plus
navigating personal relationships with strength and humor's8212;along comes 's8216;the change's8217; with frustratingly unpredictable hot flashes. 's8220;Hormone replacement therapy is an
effective option in dispelling the flashes, but many women are wary of possible side effects like an increased risk for heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and dementia. Chillpacks are a
way to battle hot flashes naturally, without the use of hormones.'s8221;
One of the big surprises was how many men are purchasing the Chillpacks for their loved ones. 's8220;Perhaps they's8217;re tired of their partners tossing off all the covers or keeping
the thermostat on 60. Whether it's8217;s self-preservation or love, men account for nearly a third of all CoolSistas's8217;Chillpack sales.'s8221;
Remember that Chillpacks make a great gift for that hot woman in your life.
