Demystifying Health Care Delivery in Communities

April 11, 2005 -- Issues pertaining to how health care systems provide for the growing needs of their communities are complex, ranging from managed care, technology investment, capital expansion, marketing, quality care, to other revenue generation concerns.

Gwinnett Health System, Inc.'s administrators are taking proactive efforts to call for support of its expansion to meet the needs of a growing community. Gwinnett Health System includes Gwinnett Medical Center and other state-of-the-art inpatient, outpatient and emergency/trauma care facilities. Gwinnett Health System, headquartered in Lawrenceville, Georgia, is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the nation.

Gwinnett Health System, Inc. hired Global Business Developers Inc. to facilitate work connected with a committee comprised of business and community leaders. The committee was formed to examine concerns associated with providing health care to the citizens served by Gwinnett County in accordance with the Charter of the Study Group for Community Health Care Delivery Systems.

Global Business Developers began by conducting an assessment to identify study group perceptions about health care surrounding both hospital and community, and creation of a methodology to explore pertinent issues. The approach included a number of elements, but one of the early strategic efforts was the employment of health care experts to address and educate the Study Group about Gwinnett Health System's performance relative to national and regional metrics. Further work examined the historical financial condition, results of operations, as well as the anticipated growth and capital needs of Gwinnett Health System. The Study Group's position stated, "The community has a moral and economic obligation to provide healthcare for its citizens."

After almost a year long process, Global Business Developers Inc. presented its draft of a report to the Study Group. The Study Group made its recommendations to Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners on March 15, 2005 which encouraged support for Gwinnett Health System's expansion requirements.
