The housing boom in Washington, DC has been a bust for people with disabilities who are looking for affordable and accessible housing. Despite record-breaking construction of new housing
units, persons with disabilities are finding it more difficult to secure housing because fewer accessible units remain. On Wednesday, November 30, 2005 the DC Self-Advocacy Network
Advisory Board, a project of the District of Columbia Developmental Disabilities Council (DDC), will host a community forum to discuss the need for housing that is both accessible as well
as affordable.
Citizens and city officials will gather to speak about programs, policies and plans designed to increase affordable, accessible housing options for persons with disabilities. The DC
Self-Advocacy Network Advisory Board has invited housing policymakers including Mr. Jalal Greene, Director of the Department of Housing and Community Development, and invited District
government officials including Mayor Williams and Council members Mr. Adrian Fenty and developers including Mr. George Rothman from Manna, Inc. They will explore strategies for providing
affordable and accessible housing to District residents with disabilities including residents with very low incomes.
A report released this month by the Urban Institute stated that "[a substantial number of rental properties that have long provided affordable shelter for low- and moderate-income
residents are being sold to new investors, renovated as luxury housing, or converted to condominiums." As a result, the problem for District residents with disabilities is compounded with
even fewer housing units that are physically accessible.
Community members are strongly encouraged to attend this interactive forum. The forum will be held at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G Street NW Level A, Room 5 from 5:30pm
to 7:30pm.
