Mariner Computers to Offer the Worlds First Dedicated Marine Navigation Software Package Running on

December 24, 2004 -- While the Linux operating system has been gaining popularity around the world it has lacked a dedicated marine navigation package.

This is all set to change at the London International Boat Show next month when Mariner Computers will reveal the first marine navigation software program written from the ground up to run on the Linux operating system. The easy to use user interface has been designed to let the user concentrate on sailing and not on operating the software.

"People have been using Linux onboard for sometime now, adapting programs designed for other tasks and scanning their own charts. Now we can offer them a dedicated software program and access to officially digitised charts" said Martin Cridge, Project Manager at Mariner Computers.

The program is compatible with raster charts from the likes of Softchart and Maptech and offers many advanced features such as support for AIS receivers.

Users can plot their progress in real time the software being compatible with any GPS that outputs NMEA 0183.
Creating waypoints which can be joined together to form routes is as easy as clicking on the relevant spot on the chart.

System Requirements
Lycoris Desktop/LX, Mandrake 9.x, SUSE 9.X or any other current distributions of Linux.
Pentium III 500
128 MB RAM
100 MB available hard disk space (additional space required for charts)
16 bit colour VGA-compatible display
12x or higher CD-ROM drive
Mouse or other pointing device

The software will be available for purchase in the New Year. For details or further information please consult the Mariner Computers website at http://www.marinercomputers.co.uk
