Miami Cruise Security Managers Witness NonLethal Security Technologies

Fresh from security projects for national port operators in the Caribbean, Eos Risk Management conducted a demonstration of non-lethal security technologies in the Port of Miami on the 2nd of May.

Set up at the request of a number of cruise line security and safety managers, the event was attended by a number of high profile members of the ICCL and its membership. Guest attending included Stanford Dino, Director of Operations for the ICCL, and security managers from a large number of cruise lines including: Royal Caribbean Line, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, NCL, Disney Cruises and others. The event was also attended by representatives of several government agencies intent on evaluating some of the products being showcased.

Products included in the demonstrations, which were held at the Port of Miami included, thermal imaging technology, high intensity lighting systems, acoustic devices and specialist running gear entanglement systems.

Opening the event, David Johnson of Eos conducted a brief presentation outlining how a non-lethal approach could assist cruise lines with incident management and mitigation of liability. The presentation continued with an insight into the nature of the threats currently facing the marine industries, with a focus on piracy, petty theft and of course terrorism. The statistics concerning piracy alone, make interesting reading for many, with over 440 crew taken hostage and 23 vessel hijackings in just 3 regions in 2005 alone.

The event continued with a number of brief presentations covering; high intensity lighting systems, thermal imaging/night vision, a Running Gear Entanglement System, and the widely reported Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD).

Of great interest to the attendees was the mix of both light and sound for security purposes. Garth Finch of the Carlisle and Finch Company, who partner with Eos, held a fascinating presentation on the usage and operability of their remote, directional, high intensity searchlight systems. The systems, the most powerful searchlights available today, allow the user to focus a tight beam of 48million candlepower strength, for over 3 miles. Security applications such as maintaining stand-off boundaries, searching, and blinding were discussed.

The event included a demonstration of the LRAD in the Port of Miami. The LRAD, used in the widely publicised attach on the Seabourne Spirit off the Somali coast, is a cutting edge directional sound system, which can be used to focus sound as far as 1km. David informed the audience of the applications for the device, such as assisting with the determination of intent for approaching craft, when radio contact cannot be maintained. He went on to describe how the LRAD, when put on full acoustic strength can produce the same sound levels as an F-15 fighter jet taking off. It was as no surprise following this revelation, that when the demonstration took place, several of the security managers attending, chose to stay behind the device (where the sound emitted is 60 times less than that emitted from the front of the LRAD).

The LRAD demonstration graphically gave the attendees an insight into how the device can be used for both safety and security purposes.

Closing the event was a demonstration of thermal imaging technology, which indicated to the attendees the safety and security uses for combined night-vision and thermal imaging cameras. With the demo held on the lawns of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line HQ, a large number of staff from the Company came out to take a look at the demonstrations, this was particularly true for the LRAD, which caused considerable interest. One of the attendees, a security manager from a major cruise line stated that, "these products are a great indication of how far technology has come in terms of security. We are greatly interested in all of the items we have seen today, as apart from the obvious security applications, all of them have safety uses, and would help to reduce our liability in the event of a significant security incident."

The Company welcomes expressions of interest from other notable organisations, to provide similar events to their members, and invites any companies interested in non-lethal technology, whether land or water based, to contact them to find out more.
