Model for Disney's "Mulan" to Attend International Kung Fu Tournament July 28-29, 2007 in Maryland


Actress and Martial Artist Mimi Chan to attend 2007 U.S. International Kuo Shu (Kung Fu) Championship Tournament in Hunt Valley, Maryland.


July 27, 2007 -- The United States Kuo Shu Federation is proud to announce the attendance of renowned martial artist and actress Mimi Chan at the 2007 U.S. International Kuo Shu (Kung Fu) Championship Tournament on July 28 and 29, 2007 at the Marriott Hunt Valley Inn in Hunt Valley, MD.



The 2007 U.S. International Kuo Shu (Kung Fu) Championship Tournament at Marriott's Hunt Valley Inn, in Hunt Valley, Maryland hosts an average of 600 competitors from 15 countries, including the United States, Taiwan, China, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, Russia, Canada, Serbia, Italy, and Poland. The tournament, sanctioned by The World Kuo Shu Federation, promotes friendship, unity, physical fitness, harmony, martial ethics, and peace around the world by bringing together martial artists from every walk of life.



Attending this year is Mimi Chan, the daughter of Wah Lum Grandmaster Pui Chan. Mimi began her training at the age of 3, was performing in local exhibitions by the age of 5, and has been teaching and competing since the age of 12.In addition to Grand Champion titles in several international tournaments, as well as being named Inside Kung Fu magazine's "Woman of the Year," Mimi was the martial arts reference and model for Walt Disney's "Mulan." Her film credits also include the Discovery Channel's "Secret of the Warrior's Power,"Mortal Kombat Conquest,"The Disciples," and "Fistful of Dragons."



Kuo Shu (also known as Kung Fu), is known for its emphasis on a healthy body, strong moral character, and promoting peace and harmony. As a method of cultivating the mind and body, Kuo Shu appeals to persons of all ages and nationalities.



On-site Master demonstrations and seminars by expert martial artists will be held throughout the weekend. Participants of all ages will compete in over 255 divisions, including Forms, Weapons, Two-Man Sets, Light Contact Sparring, Tai Ji Quan, Ba Qua Zhang, Xing Yi Quan, Wushu, Shuai Jiao, Pushing Hands, and numerous other Chinese Martial Arts. The Lei Tai (Full Contact) fights will take place on Saturday afternoon, with the finals occurring in the evening.



Since 1994, the U.S.K.S.F. has hosted the only annual Kuo Shu Tournament with formal representation from the President and Vice President. President George W. Bush said of the participants of the annual tournament, "Your strength and discipline set a fine example for others and reflect the spirit of our Nation." The U.S.K.S.F. has received citations and declarations from the Mayor of Baltimore and the Baltimore County Executive, and is the first Kuo Shu organization to receive proclamations from the Governor, declaring a "Kuo Shu Federation Week" in Maryland. Those invited to this year's Tournament include White House Representatives, Congressional Representatives, and other Maryland Public Officials.
