Top Stem Cell Research Laboratories Revealed



Ion Channel Media Group, a private biotechnology and advertising firm, released their list of the top stem cell research labs. The ranking was compiled using the publication and citation history of nearly 5000 stem cell research labs worldwide. The list can be accessed from the stem cell research portal at http://www.stemcellscience.org.

Irving Weissman'ss lab at Stanford garnered the highest honours based largely on his influential work with haematopoietic stem cells and the role of signalling in regulating their growth. Catherine Verfaillie'ss laboratory at the University of Minnesota earned the number two spot based upon her work with stem cells derived from bone marrow. Most of the laboratories in the top 25 are from the United States, despite the strict regulations placed upon stem cell research by the US government.

Laboratories in Japan, Germany, France and the United Kingdom also occupy many of the top spots due partly to their govenement'ss more lenient rules regarding stem cell research. Christian Hesketh, the CEO of Ion Channel Media Group said, It is remarkable that the US is still the clear leader in stem cell research despite the significant restrictions placed upon stem cell research in that country. We will likely see the rankings shift as research labs from other countries with fewer restrictions begin to pull ahead.
