Gateway Medical Alliance GMA Continues Earthquake Rebuilding Effort in Morocco
On February 24, 2004 at 6.5 magnitude earthquake shook this rural North African area. Over 600 people were killed when 12,000 mud and stone homes collapsed on them in their sleep. While the city of Al Hoceima itself sustained relatively little damage, many of the surrounding villages were almost completely destroyed. At least 50,000 people found themselves homeless in a few short minutes.
Since that time more than 400 Gateway Medical Alliance volunteers from inside Morocco, the U.K., Ireland and United States have cleared rubble from 600 home sites, dug foundation trenches and completed rock, rebar and concrete foundations. The Moroccan government has built 7,000-8,000 homes, but limited funds mean that none are complete. These 10m by 10m (100 square meter) homes have been built with only 40 square meters of roofing and no windows, doors, plumbing or interior walls. To date Gateway Medical Alliance has completed 12 of these homes. Gateway's goal is to complete 200 homes as funding allows.
Future projects in Ait Zakri include a community center, a well and reservoir.
Gateway Medical Alliance is a U.S. based humanitarian medical relief and development organization serving Morocco exclusively. Volunteers donating medical supplies and working shoulder to shoulder with their new Moroccan friends are witnessing lives rebuilt while they establish cross-cultural relationships.
