American Otological Society 2009 Recipient For the Award of MeritGoes...

On Friday the 29th of May in Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. William H. Lippy from Warren, Ohio was presented the prestigious Award of Merit by the Ameican Otologic Society.

Dr. Antonio De la Cruz, the immediate past President from the world famous House Ear Institute in Los Angeles, presented the Award to Dr. Lippy noting his multiple contributions in his field of otosclerosis, stapedectomy and revision stapedectomy. This would include over 17,000 stapedectomy surgeries performed, sixty peer review papers and seven book chapters he has written.

The American Otological (Ear) Society was founded in 1864 and has presented the Award of Merit to only one recipient per year since 1949. When Dr. Lippy was presented the award, he was completely surprised. He noted that he was shocked and humbled along with being completely overwhelmed at receiving the esteemed prize. These are both my peers and the most outstanding otologists in the world, with all of my predecessors involved in developing the operations that preceded my specialties, the stapedectomy and the stapes revision surgeries. Each year the Society elects only one recipient and for me to be picked is a tremendous honor and the highlight of my medical career. Lippy also noted that the names of past honorees are the most familiar in our field. It'ss similar to current baseball players relating to the names of fellow players such as Feller, Gehrig, Ruth, Dimaggio and Mays.
