November celebrates National Family Caregiver's Month. One in every six Americans is a family caregiver, and their number keeps growing. More than 50 million family caregivers across the
country provide over 80% of all homecare, contributing more than $257 billion worth of work. Businesses lose up to $29 billion annually because of employees who must provide care to
family members.
More Americans join the ranks of family caregivers every day. Most assume their new duties with no training or support. They struggle to balance the demands of family and work with
providing care to their loved ones. Caregivers suffer financial, emotional, and physical stresses as they try to care for seriously ill family members. National Family Caregivers' Month
gives them the recognition they deserve.
Maryann Schacht, MSW, is a nationally recognized expert on caregiving issues. Her book, A Caregiver's Challenge: Living, Loving, Letting Go, has become an invaluable resource for
caregivers. Based on her personal experience caring for her terminally ill husband and her professional expertise as a therapist, the book offers family caregivers the information and
support they need. National health organizations including the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer's Diseases Center have selected it for their libraries.
