Human Cloning Foundation Backs Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures

The Human Cloning Foundation (HCF) said it is supporting the Missouri Coalition of Lifesaving Cures, a coalition of medical groups, scientists and business leaders who are gathering signatures for a constitutional amendment that would allow any stem cell research and therapy to be performed in Missouri.

The move was in response to initiatives by anti-abortion lawmakers to push for legislation banning all forms of human cloning. A legislative ban failed to pass earlier this year.

Stem cell research has the potential to revolutionize the field of medicine. It can save countless lives and make diseases like Parkinson s, Alzheimer s and other degenerative diseases a thing of the past, said David Madrigal HCF spokesman. We are confident that the people of Missouri will support legislation that aims to save lives.

Madrigal said there is a strong worldwide trend to explore the potential of stem cell technology. He pointed to a recent study of 30 countries that showed that 23 countries have enacted national legislation on the creation and use of cloned embryos, which shows that more countries around the world are exploring the vast medical potential of cell research.

The HCF notes that the pro-stem cell research coalition that is gathering signatures includes the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, which reports say would be forced to build an expansion of its research center across the state line in Kansas if a ban on therapeutic cloning is enforced in Missouri.

The coalition also includes Columbia physician and former president of the University of Missouri Board of Curators Hugh Stephenson as honorary co-chairman.
