Imagine getting a daily fix of chocolate and omega-3 fatty acids in one yummy product. That's8217;s the premise behind the new Choco-Omeg line of chocolates (bars and boxed pieces) from
Dynamic Chocolates. The line recently made its debut in a number of Canadian pharmacies, and Dynamic is working now to sell U.S. retailers on the merits of its new premium, functional
chocolates. Official US launch date: August 28th, 2006 at the Diet, Nutrition & Vitamin ECRM show in Illinois.
Those who are followers of nutrition news may know that omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil and flaxseed among other sources, are associated with a variety of health benefits, and that
most people don's8217;t get an adequate supply through diet alone. Omega-3s are not associated with great taste, however, so arriving at a palatable formulation for the chocolates took
some doing.
Fortunately, Dynamic had the right person for the job's8212;Gale Rudolph, Ph.D.'s8212;an experienced R&D professional with a background in both the food industry and the nutritional
supplements business. Rudolph spent nearly two years arriving at a formulation that artfully blends premium Belgian chocolate with omega-3 fatty acids and a variety of other vitamins,
minerals and phytochemical compounds.
There are three varieties's8212;each formulated with Omega -3 from Martek/DHA, to deliver a specific benefit. The Memory Formula (chocolate with an orange flavor) includes 55mg choline to
promote healthy memory and brain functions; the Calcium Formula (milk chocolate with rice crisps) boasts 500 mg of calcium per bar; and the Cardio Formula (dark chocolate with raspberry
pieces) contains 200 mg of Omega-3s, which are associated with heart health.
The primary target audience is health-aware adult women, most of whom are at least somewhat knowledgeable about the potentially therapeutic benefits of the ingredients found in the
chocolates, explains Sam Macdonald, Dynamic's8217;s vice president of marketing and sales.
The company is seeking placement in the nutrition bar section for the Choco-Omeg bars. A bar will sell for $2.49 each. All are marketed under the brand name Choco-Omeg, and will be
supported by national and regional consumer campaigns.
