MTU Series 4000 Engines Power World Class Mining Equipment

MTU'ss Series 4000 engine continues to set standards in the mining industry for safety, reliability and fuel economy. In doing so, it has become the engine of choice for several of the world'ss top equipment manufacturers with over 1,700 engines in use today.

MTU has preferred engine supplier relations with Hitachi, LeTourneau and Terex, and just recently signed a new three-year supply agreement with Liebherr to provide engines for its Ultra Class T282B 400-ton haul truck.

MTU'ss Series 4000 engine is well respected in the mining industry, said Ran Archer, Mining Sales Manager for MTU. It has everything that an OEM or mining company values: safety, high power density, reliabilty and fuel efficiency.

The latest version of the Series 4000 is a fully compliant EPA Tier 2 certified engine and has a revolutionary thermal protection system that is unrivalled in this segment. Using a liquid-cooled exhaust system, the engine surface temperature is maintained below 200 degrees Celsius, safely below the auto-ignition point for combustible fluids such as oil and diesel fuel. This significantly reduces the risk of fire hazard for mining equipment, enhancing operator safety and protecting mine personnel and company equipment assets.

The new Series 4000 has greater displacement and higher power ratings, while maintaining high reliability. The 12, 16 and 20 cylinder versions have maximum horsepower ratings of 2,250 bhp, 3,000 bhp and 3,750 bhp (1,680 kW, 2,240 kW and 2,800 kW), respectively. In addition, they have been designed to rigorous standards and depending on the duty cycle, achieve an average life of 20,000 - 40,000 hours before first overhaul, while minimizing the maintenance required between overhauls.

The Series 4000 also achieves high fuel economy with MTU'ss proprietary second generation common rail fuel-injection system and ADEC electronic engine control management. Efficient fuel consumption is achieved while complying with EPA Tier 2 exhaust emissions levels. Depending on application, the Series 4000 is between 5% and 15% more fuel efficient than competitor engine models, resulting in substantial cost savings over the life of the engine.

Ease of maintenance and optimal use of parts inventory are key criteria for lowest cost per ton operation of a haulage and loading fleet. MTU Series 4000 is a true engine family, with 12, 16 and 20 cylinder configurations sharing common parts and engine control. This single engine family provides reliable power for a mixed fleet of trucks, excavators or front-end wheel loaders working in unison without the burden of additional stock holding of spares, special tools or additional training of staff.

OEM'ss such as Hitachi recognize the value of the Series 4000 and offer the 16V4000 as the standard engine in its EH5000. Liebherr uses the 16V4000 in its TI-274 and Terex uses all Series 4000 cylinder sizes in its haul trucks, including the 20V4000 which is standard equipment in the Terex MT6300AC 400-ton haul truck. LeTourneau Technologies uses the 12V4000 and 16V4000 in its L-1350, L1850 and L2350 front-end wheel loaders.

In addition to the Series 4000, the Series 2000 is a mainstay of MTU'ss engine portfolio of products serving the mining industry. Used extensively in quarries worldwide, 12 and 16 cylinder Series 2000 engines power 65, 70 and 100 ton Terex and Hitachi trucks with a fuel consumption rate that is the best in the industry. Terex Reedrill and Schramm use the Series 2000 engine as standard equipment in their rotary drills. LeTourneau Technologies also uses the Series 2000 in the D-950 rubber tire dozer, L-950 loader and the new L-1150 loader.

MTU'ss product line for the mining industry also includes its Underground Optimized's8482; engines, designed specifically to meet the needs of underground mining operations. These engines are MSHA and CANMET certified, are extremely clean-running, and ensure optimal ventilation rates for lowest cost per ton power solutions.

Regardless of the application, MTU has an engine to fit the needs of the mining industry, said Archer. Equally important - MTU provides support to OEM'ss and mining companies for its entire engine product line through its unrivaled global service network.

Genuine factory parts, filters and fluids are available for all current and legacy products, including the popular MTU Detroit Diesel 2-cycle engine family.
