Virginia man uses online marketplace as job search tool

RICHMOND, Va.--A Richmond man is hoping that "doing it eBay" will land him a job.

Mike Johnson, 35, listed his auction, "Need an Employee" I Need a Job. Hire Me For One Week," last Thursday. With two days remaining, the auction has garnered approximately 2600 "hits," 66 "watchers," and numerous e-mails of support from people all over the country. Johnson says he is willing to work on a one week trial period, but the ultimate goal is permanent, full-time employment.

"I am encouraged by all of the letters of support I have received," Johnson said. "It lets me know that people are interested in people, not just in candy wrappers and used bandages."

On his eBay page, Johnson says his auction's purpose is to find work so his 11-year old stepdaughter can have clothes for school, and for him to help meet some of her other needs. (She has cerebral palsy and cannot walk). A licensed English teacher in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Johnson is interested in writing, speaking, and sales-"Anything in an office or professional setting."

With less than two days remaining on the auction, there are still no definite job prospects, and bidding has only reached $100, where it has remained for the past few days. Despite the lack of high bid amounts, Johnson remains optimistic. Even if it doesn't land him his "dream job," he knows the auction can be an inspiration to other unemployed people.

"If every person who has a need lists an eBay auction or comes up with some other creative way to raise money or find a better job, and the community whole-heartedly supports the effort, then we could probably eradicate most of the ills that plague society." Johnson said. "But it takes compassion from the community to do so. I would like to encourage every reader (of his auction) to help somebody. Make a difference. Change a life. Foster a change for the better. This auction is but one way to do it. What's most important is that we all do something to brighten someone else's day."
