Going Up Stadias Viewport Design Dares CN Tower Elevator Riders Not...

On April 11 Toronto's CN Tower unveiled it latest attraction, the first of five elevator cabs redesigned with a glass floor. Seeking to reinvent itself after losing the prestigious title of "World's Tallest Building" to the Burj Dubai tower in the United Arab Emirates, the CN Tower called on the builders of it original glass floor attraction to design a more high-tech version for the elevator.

Stadia Industries Ltd supplied and installed the original glass floor on the observation deck in 1994. The work Stadia performed became an integral part of an incredibly successful attraction providing some two million visitors a year a chance to test their mettle by walking the glass to get a 324m (1122 ft) view straight down. Looking to build on the success of this attraction Jack Robinson the tower's Chief Operating Officer said, "The CN Tower is always trying to reinvent itself....We took the opportunity to not just upgrade the elevator, but to put in a world class attraction, if you want to call it that, in the form of a glass-panel floor."

Experience with the first glass floor made Stadia the obvious choice to design the new high-tech load bearing viewport for the elevator. "It is a niche market but I'm glad we captured it" Tim Byrne President of Stadia Industries expressed. "The market may be small but we enjoy the work because it gives us a unique opportunity to innovate and problem solve... It's what our customers have come to depend on and it lets us showcase our talents as a company."

Stadia's experience with the original glass floor and almost 20 years servicing some of the highest windows to the best views in Toronto gave Stadia the experience and insight to complete the unique and challenging design in less than two weeks. With three layers of heat strengthened laminated glass plus a layer of blast resistant film the viewport provides virtually "bullet-proof" structural security.

Not forgetting that segment of the tourist market that may feel some trepidation or anxious about the trip to the top, the viewport design also includes an innovative fourth electrified glass layer that when triggered becomes instantaneously opaque. This anti-vertigo feature allows the tour guide escorting the passengers the option to toggle the view on or off providing some measure of comfort for those riders that may be a little prone to illyngophobia as the elevator zooms skyward at 22 km/hour (15 miles/hour).
