Independent Candidate Billy Szych is Officially on the Ballot for First...

William H. 's8220;Billy's8221; Szych has successfully reached the first major milestone in his candidacy to represent the 1st Congressional District in the United States Congress. His message: We are not Democrats or Republicans, we are Americans. Szych 's8211; who is running as an unenrolled candidate 's8211; believes he is quickly establishing a strong base of support in this predominantly independent District, which in many towns has 60% or more of voters registered as unenrolled.

Szych, a native of Massachusetts, grew up in Hatfield where he graduated in 1971 from the public school system. He went on to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he graduated with honors in 1975 with a BA in Political Science. In 1990, he was awarded an MA in Management from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Szych retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1995 after twenty years service on active duty. When Szych became Hatfield'ss Town Administrator, he acquired first-hand experience in the challenges facing all towns and cities throughout the Commonwealth, especially in the development of balanced budgets during severe cuts in State aid.

Szych was working as Town Administrator on September 11, 2001, and, as a result of the terrorist attacks, he volunteered to return to active duty. Once back on active duty, he volunteered to deploy to Iraq.

After his return from Iraq, Szych was given the leadership of a special Air Force-wide project to develop new strategies and systems to help defeat the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).He reverted to retired military status in July of last year and was hired by L3 Communications as a Senior Military Analyst at the Pentagon. Szych returned to Hatfield in April, 2006 to run for U.S. Congress as an un-enrolled candidate and formally announced his candidacy on May 15th.

Szych states that people have lost faith in politicians to a level that is almost shocking. He maintains that the key to restoring the people's8217;s faith is to send men and women of the highest character and dedication to Congress 's8230; people who are able to work with both sides of the aisle. 's8220;It's8217;s time to stop the bickering and nonsense. As an independent voice in Congress, I will not be tied to any one party's8217;s platform, and will be able to address each issue on its merits alone, working for the good of all Americans,'s8221; says Szych.

Szych believes Congress is 's8220;broken, but it can be fixed's8221;. One critical thing he would like to see is an end to traditional earmarks or 's8220;pork's8221;. He proposes a direct apportionment of federal funds to cities and towns (as is currently done with State lottery receipts) that they can use as they see fit. This would prevent certain parts of the Commonwealth from continually getting their 's8220;pet projects's8221; funded at the expense of smaller towns and cities. 's8220;The Big Dig continues to siphon off funds for Boston at the expense of the towns and cities of the 1st Congressional District. It is pork at its worst, and it is wrong,'s8221; notes Szych.

Billy is married to Janet Revie Jan Szych, originally from Fort William, Scotland. They have a daughter, Sophie, a 2003 Smith Academy graduate who is currently attending a State College in Massachusetts, and a son, Andrew who graduated from Smith Academy in 2005. He is a past commander of American Legion Post 344 in Hatfield and a former member of the Hatfield Lions Club.
