Unity of Phoenix presents Dream Journaling with Mary Flanagan Friday...

May 3, 2005 -- This is a unique opportunity to share time with Mary Flanagan who is a dream consultant, lecturer and columnist.



Exploring -

As we work with our dreams over time, we become familiar with our own inner images. Most images we dream are actually aspects of ourselves that we see as another person or thing. We need to become aware of what these people and things represent to us in order to understand.



The work we do with our dreams is an exploration rather than an interpretation. In other words, we want to get to know and understand them rather than explain them. The images we see usually have important personal associations in addition to the ones that come from TV, movies or our culture in general. It's important to include both types of association when we journal our dreams.



Journaling -

Once you've written the story of the dream you might wish to expore it by asking some questions:

- What feeling did you have when you woke up from the dream

- What questions would you like to ask the characters

- Do you have any sense of a message or specific situation from waking life

- What are the most vivd images in the dream

- What are your strongest personal and cultural associations with the dream images

- When you record your dreams, pay careful attention to the images. If you use a tape recorder, describe the images in detail--color, texture, size and so forth. Then sketch them on paper as soon as you have time. Once you have the image, write a few cultural and personal things you associate with the image. Note the feelings ou had during the dream. Then, give your dream a title. It helps focus your feelings about it.

Mary has been counseling people based on dreams for over 10 years. She will assist us in moving toward a deeper understanding of what our dreams can mean to us by exploring them and learning how to journal them.
