Visitor Numbers Skyrocket For Isle of Man Government Website

Visitors to all Isle of Man government websites (www.gov.im) increased by 35% - from 6.2 million to 8.4 million - between 2006 and 2007.

The overall trend is for a marked increase in hits per month and from April 2007 to April 2008 the number of hits increased by 32%, up from 14,638,058 to 19,234,606.

The impressive figures are a tribute to the concerted effort behind developing the Island government's web presence since 2003, when the Information System Division (ISD) at the Treasury began developing a broad technology upgrade programme to provide a high availability, resilient, converged IT base.

Division director Allan Paterson said: 'The Isle of Man Government's integrated approach of using information technology and delivering efficient and effective public service is bringing real benefits inside government and to business and citizens on the Island.'

The JUPITER Programme (Joined UP Information for The Electronic Resident) was instituted to modernise the business of government by joining up different parts of government and provide new, efficient and convenient ways for citizens and businesses to communicate with government and to receive its services.

Island residents can now use the government website to pay income tax and VAT, as well as Utility bills, and more than 2m has so far been received in electronic payments. Enhanced online services also apply to hospital administration, the ship register, and a new vehicle licensing system.

An initiative introduced in May will attract more visitors to government sites, The Treasury enhanced its online services for employers in respect of employees' taxation. Online, employees can now view current employees' tax codes, submit details of those starting or leaving employment and update changes to employee status. Other services include submitting a remittance card, making ITIP and NIC online and making payments by BACS credit transfer, credit or debit cards online.

The government enlists Island-based PDMS (www.pdms.com) to provide software development to fulfill its vision of providing a seamless web service.

PDMS Managing Director Chris Gledhill said: 'I'm impressed but not shocked at these statistics, the government's commitment to developing its web presence and in encouraging the world of e-commerce generally on the Island is to be admired and it's paying off.'
