Awardwinning Film No Pain No Gain Flexes its Muscles on DVD Feature Film by Bodybuilding Insider Selling Briskly



After screening in theaters nationwide, the film No Pain, No Gain is selling so strongly in its initial DVD release that it is now expanding to additional retail outlets nationwide. It is also available online at the movie'ss website NoPainNoGainMovie.com.

No Pain, No Gain is the first ever feature-length fiction movie set in the world of bodybuilding and also the first bodybuilding film since the documentary Pumping Iron in 1977, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. The timely film, which tackles the controversial issue of steroids in sports, obsession with body image and fad diets, has been featured on ESPN.

An official selection at the São Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil, No Pain, No Gain also screened to enthusiastic crowds at the Palm Beach Film Festival and the Houston Film Festival (Worldfest), where it won an award for Best Director, First Feature.

Writer, producer and director Samuel Turcotte, an avid bodybuilder since the age of 15, worked for over five years on the film. The positive response we'sve gotten has been fantastic, said Turcotte. It is gratifying to realize that there is public interest in this fascinating and misunderstood sport. Bodybuilders have long been grossly misrepresented in the media and my film gives a more balanced and realistic portrayal.

The film'ss lead, Gus Malliarodakis, portrayed a submarine officer in the Emmy Award-winning TV mini-series War and Remembrance. Recently, Malliarodakis won first place overall in the Masters North American Bodybuilding Championship, in many ways mirroring the quest of the film'ss protagonist.

Co-star Dennis Newman, a former champion bodybuilder who won the Teen USA, Mr. California and Mr. USA competitions, was diagnosed with leukemia just ten days after winning the USA Bodybuilding Championship in 1994. After undergoing chemotherapy and a stem-cell transplant, he continued to compete at the professional level for many years.

The movie also features Joe Hursley, who recently appeared in the feature film Accepted, starred in MTV'ss You'sve Got a Friend series and was a finalist in NBC'ss Last Comic Standing. Kim Travis, who appeared in Private Parts, Hackers and Cadillac Man, also has a major role. Cameo appearances include Julie Strain, so-called Queen of the B Movies, and Jill Mills, two-time winner of ESPN'ss World'ss Strongest Woman competition.

One measure of the film'ss success is its strong following among military personnel stationed in the United States and overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq. Gianni Passakos, Private 1st Class in A Company, 4th Infantry Division, Second Platoon, stationed outside Tikrit, Iraq writes that the movie is awesome. Everyone who sees it over here loves it.
