DVDCDPlazacom Introduces Mangal Pandey The Rising

"Mangal Pandey - The Rising" is going to be the first Indian film to open the Locarno Film Festival, alongwith its global release on August 12th. The VCD and DVD of the film is going to be released soon on www.dvdvcdplaza.com. Pre bookings are invited.

Mangal Pandey is officially going to open the 58th Locarno Film Festival, to be held from August 3 to 13 in Switzerland. The film will also be a part of the competition section.

Producer Bobby Bedi is excited about the news and plans to send the film to other North American film festivals, once the film is released in India this August.

Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Ketan Mehta and Bobby Bedi will attend the screening of the film.

Aamir Khan's new release "Mangal Pandey - The Rising" is going to hit the theatres Aug 12. It is a much-anticipated affair, not the least due to Aamir's new look with the handlebar moustaches and long hair.

A few days ago Aamir was present along with the whole crew of "Mangal Pandey" on the music release at PVR Priya in Delhi. "You can't impose your social practices on it and then loot it economically. That's our strong theme - the concept of freedom and the right of every individual to hold his head as high as the next person," he says.

Chief of Army Staff General J J Singh released the music of Aamir Khan's Mangal Pangey at Priya PVR Cinema, New Delhi, on Thursday night.

The much-hyped film is produced by Bobby Bedi.

Bedi presented the first copy of the music to filmmaker Yash Chopra, whose Yash Raj Films holds the rights to distribute the film and music in India and aborad.

Aamir, who plays Mangal Pandey, the sepoy who revolted against the British colonisers, said he hoped the younger generation would learn from the film and the illustrious freedom fighter.

"This is the right time for the release of a film like this because whether it be Afganistan or Iraq, we see foreign powers trying to impose their administration on local people," the star said. "I feel privileged to have accepted the film and having done the role of Mangal Pandey. (Director) Ketan Mehta has done a wonderful job and it is wrong to say that I was an invisible director," he added.

The film also stars Rani Mukerji, Amisha Patel and British actor Tobey Stephens.

Rani, who plays Heera, a prostitute, in the film, said, "The role demanded that my body language be different and the movements be spontenous. I wish that they (prostitutes) were treated with more respect. If I ever get a chance to do something for them, I would not hesitate from helping them."

"I would like to express my gratitude to the Indian film industry for recreating the period of 1857, which marked the beginning of the Indian Independence movement," General Singh said. "Mangal Pandey was a righteous character and he rebelled against the British and ignited the sparks that helped us overthrow the British," he added.

The film hits theatres on August 12, with an eye on the Independence Day weekend. "With a long weekend, we hope to do good business in the first week. This started as a large project and continued to grow larger and larger," Bedi said.

Javed Akhtar has written the lyrics of the seven songs and A R Rahman has composed the music.

About Mangal Pandey

The first freedom fighter of India and martyr Mangal Pandey was born in village Nagwa District Ballia in Bihar. He was famous for bravery amongst his colleagues. An english scholar "Fisher" has written that Shri Mangal Pandey was having all qualities of a good soldier. He was brave and capable to embrace his death peacefully

According to the records available in Jabalpur museum. Shri Mangal Pandey was due to be executed on 18th April but he was hanged ten days before i.e. 8th April and it was kept secret. Because English rules were well aware of the fact that if Mangal Pandey remains alive it will endanger British rule.

Thus Mangal Pandey became the first freedom fighter & and martyr of 1857. The name of Mangal Pandey became an emblem of revolt against British rule.
