Iowa Filmmakers Two of Top 10 SemiFinalists in MTV Film Contest

Iowa-based filmmakers and University of Iowa juniors Scott Beck & Bryan Woods, both 21, have been selected as two of the 10 semi-finalists in MTVu's Best Film on Campus: Trailer Challenge competition, in which college filmmakers across the nation create a two-minute film trailer. Online voters can view the trailers online and select the finalist. Finalists will be chosen by another round of online voting, as well as MTV staff and/or celebrity judges. The trailers will also be screened on MTVu, a college channel that spans 730 campuses nationwide and reaches 6.5 million students.

Beck & Woods' trailers, "University Heights" and "Her Summer," will be available online for voting beginning Oct. 24 through Nov. 8 at

"We're lucky to come this far, and now we need all the support we can get," Beck says.

Last year, Beck & Woods, who work collectively, placed in the top 3 finalist position in the 2004 MTVu Best Film on Campus competition. This year, Beck & Woods entered two submissions and both made it into the top 10.

The winner receives a development deal with MTV Films and a home theater system.

Beck states, "The home theater system prize is nice, but what Bryan & I really care about is the development deal. We've done many feature films on our own, all of them for less than $300. It'd be nice to get a foot in the door, and have a major studio back our next project."

Woods also sees the contest as a great opportunity. "Last year, we started developing a feature screenplay in case we won the 2004 MTV contest. Even though we didn't win, we've been constantly working on the script, and finally, after a year, it's at the point where we're ready to produce it. It's really cool to get a second chance. We're just crossing our fingers and hoping for the best."

According to MTVu's website, voting for finalists will take place the week of November 14. The winner will be announced the week of December 12.

Their short film Shades aired nationwide to 730 universities on the MTVu channel, which reaches 6.5 million college students.
