When first encountered Erdman's distinctive work displays an ongoing exuberance and command of materials gained from a life-long interest in space and color. Selected works are drawn from her years as an artist in New York, 1959-1964, when she exhibited with Red Grooms, Mimi Gross, Peter Passuntino, Jay Milder and Bob Thompson, and conducted a graphics workshop in her loft. Following a 13-year European chapter in her life, primarily spent in Florence, Italy, where she concentrated on painting, Erdman returned to the US and settled in Santa Fe. The majority of the exhibition is drawn from this very productive period spanning the years 1987-1993, when she worked in series that track her overarching movement from flat rectangles to three dimensional double-sided prints. Pieces selected from her series "Positive/Negative,"Broken Border,"Shredded Series,"Chaos," boxes, filled Plexiglas, geometric shapes, and hanging wall sculptures.
Erdman has not only done accomplished works on paper but worked with paper in startling and endlessly inventive ways. The show will be one of the highlights of the late summer art season in Santa Fe.
The show will be curated by MaLin Wilson-Powell, a well known art curator, arts writer and art critic who currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
