The Artist Chitra Ramanathan Has Recently Completed a Major Commission for the MGM Mirage Group for
January 4, 2005 -- The artist-painter Chitra Ramanathan has recently completed a major public commission which entailed creating two paintings each measuring four feet by six feet, for the MGM Mirage Design Group's Cafe Bellagio refurbishment in Las Vegas, Nevada. These two new works have been displayed permanently in the interior of the Cafe Bellagio in October 2004 after remodelling was completed, and are based on her 1998 and 2000 originals titled "A Momentary Glance", and "Coruscation" repsectively, which in turn were selected by the MGM Mirage Group from one of the websites featuring Chitra's work.
Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India and raised in Kolkatta, West Bengal, and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, Chitra Ramanathan started drawing painting at the age of four and won prizes in art competitions throughout her childhood mostly in the Parichay Child Art Competitions hosted annually by Philips India Ltd. She remembers winning a Gevabox camera from Lever Brothers through a newspaper coloring contest entry at the age of ten and having one of her paintings showcased at the Birla Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkatta and receiving a silver trophy from Chintamini Kaur of the Government Arts College in Kolkatta during the same years.
Having migrated to the U.S. in 1984 and a U.S. citizen since 1990, Chitra has succesfully held several solo and group exhibitions of her paintings on Broadway, New York since 1995, following a large solo exhibition of her paintings at the ARC Gallery/Educational Foundation in Chicago, Illinois in 1994. Several of her exhibitions attracted rave reviews. Since then, her work has been acquired through the worldwide web as well as through contacts by individual collectors and business enterprises for collections around the United States and in Europe.
Chitra Ramanathan holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting with Honors, and a Masters degree in Business Administration both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Several websites feature her biography as well as images of her colorful, often large scale, mixed media acrylic,abstract paintings in her signature style. She is a committee member of the College Art Association of America.
Chitra has recently joined the Indianapolis Art Center, Indianapolis as Art Center faculty.
