Blanca Fest Brings Cultural Hikes and Family Entertainment to FortGarland

Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) presents Blanca Fest in Fort Garland, Colo. on Saturday Aug. 29, 2009. Blanca Fest is a day of free guided hikes and tours of the best trails, peaks and cultural sites in San Luis Valley and Sangre de Cristo range, all culminating with a 'schuck wagon's style dinner and live traditional bluegrass music featuring the band Head for the Hills.

Blanca Fest is a time to enjoy the heritage of San Luis Valley by partaking in great outdoor events to help Colorado Mountain Club raise awareness and funds for the restoration of Como Lake, said Bryan Martin, director of conservation programs.

Celebrity climbers will give free tours and guided hikes geared for all ages and abilities in San Luis Valley and the Sangre de Cristo Range. For more advanced hikers, Chris Davenport, one of the world'ss most accomplished big mountain skiers known for skiing all of Colorado'ss 'sfourteeners's in one calendar year, will guide an ascent of Blanca Peak, a 14,000's+ peak. Other tours include a bison tour, a great Sand Dunes tour, a Zapata Falls tour and many more.

After winding down from a day on the mountain, for just $15 attendees can enjoy a 'schuck wagon's style dinner at the historic Fort Garland Museum located in the shadow of Blanca Peak. San Luis Brewery will serve up some of Colorado'ss best beer and wine. After dinner, enjoy live music featuring Fort Collins-based bluegrass band, Head for the Hills.

Blanca Fest Schedule, Aug. 29, 2009:

7:00 a.m. - Free guided hikes and tours

3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. - 'sChuck wagon's style dinner

4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. - Live music featuring headliner band, Head for the Hills

Blanca Fest proceeds benefit the restoration of trails and the natural environment of Lake Como and Blanca Peak which have been impacted by heavy use.

We plan to rehabilitate the alpine environment around the lake. We also plan to more fully establish the trail to the summit in this sensitive area so that people know where to go, says Martin.
