The Indian Steps Museum is housed in a massively beautiful Arts & Crafts style building built by Attorney John E. Vandersloot. The Museum'ss name is derived from steps carved in rocks now submerged in the Susquehanna River. These steps were used by early Indians to fish for shad and other aquatic life.

Completed in 1912, the Museum building contains a round room or Kiva. The Museum building itself is quite interesting. More than 10,000 artifacts found by Vandersloot are imbedded in the interior and exterior masonry walls to form Indian patterns, birds, animals and reptiles which try to tell the story of early Indians who passed by here. Many of these artifacts are quite old, pre-dating the Egyptian pyramids. Some are from the days of Christ and others from colonial times.

The second floor of the Museum contains a special gallery dedicated to the Indians of the Susquehanna (long winding river). Numerous other Indian artifacts are displayed. This is the only building in this part of Pennsylvania dedicated entirely in memory of ancient Indian people. The original Vandersloot estate contains the Museum, a totem pole, an arboretum of trees, interesting outbuildings, a pavilion and a special park containing an interpretative nature trail.

Museum Hours: Mid-April thru Mid-October, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday and Holidays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Group tours can be arranged at other times. For more information, please call 717-862-3948.

The Indian Steps Museum is located along the Susquehanna River, a short distance from the junction of Rt. 425 and Indian Steps Road, Airville, Pa.

There is no charge for these events or for entry into the Museum. Donations are gladly accepted.
