"I'm looking for great, memorable crossover-country songs with interesting melodies, and surprises. Mid to uptempo is favored for this project, but I also love great, meaningful ballads and big powerful choruses with lots of range," states Kent.
She should be looking for those exact elements, as Cathy's vocal range spans three octaves. In the beautiful ballad, "Love Let's You Know," she sings a tribute song to her lost husband about their young daughter, who's now growing in his likeness. Her voice paints shades of emotions from soft muted tones to bright bursts of color, much like a gorgeous sunset. It's all good, it's all natural.
When asked what sort of song topics she seeks, Kent asks writers to remember that, "As an artist I will be singing many of these songs for years to come, so songs of substance that have timeless sincere messages are what I really seek."
Since everything in the music business is revolving more and more around singles, rather than albums, Kent wants all her songs to be able to be considered singles. She craves songs of integrity that can stand up to the passage of time. Does that mean she only wants somber material or sad ballads
"Not at all," is her hasty reply, "Fun or serious. A great song is a great song!"
Kent's version of "Ka-Ching!" is an example of her being able to put a little steam behind her lighter lyrics and some fun in her story by turning a break up into a lucky streak. Lots of energy in her vocals on that track. "Love Let's You Know," showcases her depth, range, and delivery of a sad message by creating a track of joyful hope. Not an easy thing to do. A set of contrasting, yet complimentary songs, both show the diversified vocal talents of Cathy Kent.
Janet Fisher, Kent's music publisher, made her reputation supplying great songs for the TV and film industries since the early 80s. For the past eight years she's been developing a record label, Goodnight Kiss Records, and Cathy is the third solo artist on the label. "We love Cathy's capabilities! Her voice in the studio has a warmth and life that's rare in these days of Pro-tools and overdubs. Her recorded voice always sounds like she's singing live, right next to you."
Cathy plays live regularly in Nashville, trying out new material and sitting in with other songwriters and musician friends, from #1 hit writers to new co-writers on the block. She meshes with them all. In August, she will be doing several shows at the Commodore in Nashville, as well as the Brentwood Grill, and of course, the iconic Bluebird Cafe. August is also the time she will select songs from a contest being held to find new material for her.
Online music host, Broadjam.com is a sponsor in the song contest, as well as co-sponsors like MusicDish, Music Connection Magazine, Celebrity Black Book, the Music Registry, and others. Cathy loves to hear songs by seasoned hit writers, but wants to always keep her ears open to new writers. Contest entrants have the chance to submit their songs and ten entrants will win prizes, including the top two having their song cut by Kent. Anyone may enter online at Broadjam or by mailing an entry to Goodnight Kiss before July 31, 2008.
"I'm delighted to have such great sponsors to help us get the word out," smiles Janet Fisher, owner of Goodnight Kiss. "An artist as great as Cathy deserves to find some new, uncovered gems. By sharing in the promotion, hopefully all sorts of songwriters will send wonderful new songs. It's exciting!"
Hearing Cathy is exciting for us, too. I can't wait to hear what she cuts next.
