American Cornhole Organization, the governing body of the sport of cornhole, takes its role to transform the backyard game of cornhole into a national sport seriously. The ACO has made great strides in standardizing the sport of cornhole (http://www.americancornhole.org), over the past several years. Whenever an ACO cornhole tournament or league is played the cornhole players are assured the rules, boards, and bags - all the elements of the game - have the same standards no matter where they play .
The first step that American Cornhole made in bringing a recognized consistency to the game was to develop a controlled manufacturing process for its equipment. The American Cornhole Tournament Series Cornhole Boards (http://www.americancornhole.com) introduced in 2004 were the result of this process. All AC sport cornhole board surfaces are 5/8 not 's189;as most cornhole game boards. The 5/8 landing surface is more dense than the 's189; board surface allowing the skilled players a more true bag placement.
American Cornhole Premium Corn Filled Softtouch Bags were manufactured to complement the AC Tournament Series Cornhole Boards. In the spring of 2005, Carnival Cruise Lines requested a more innovative cornhole bag for the American Cornhole Tournament Series Boards in use on its cruises. The result was the introduction of the Resin Filled Cornhole Bag. A bag that was longer lasting, would not mildew, and provided more consistent play. This Resin Filled bag has now replaced the Corn Filled bag and is the new American Cornhole bag standard.
The Rules of the Sport of Cornhole (http://www.americancornhole.org/cornhole-rules.shtml) have been standardized as well. The ACO Sport of Cornhole Rules state set distances, from board to board, for various levels of cornhole play: Competitive / Pro 27's, Casual 24's, and Junior / Senior 20's. The game is played in frames. Two frames equal an inning. Each player is given 4 cornhole bags to pitch per frame. A bag on the board woody is worth 1 point. A bag in the hole cornhole is worth 3 points. The ACO recognizes the first one to 21 wins the game.
The game of cornhole was traditionally played with partners. In the summer of 2006, the concept of singles play was introduced through the King of Cornhole television show. In the spring of 2007, AC introduced the first nationally recognized ranking system referred to as the Skills Challenge or SCR score. The first use of this tool came in August 2007 for the inaugural professional cornhole tournament (http://www.cornholeplayers.com). ACO'ss use of this tool selected the Top 16 cornhole players (http://www.cornholeplayers.com) to represent the World Cornhole Championship Tournament in support of the Easter Seals Work Resource Center.
The American Cornhole Organization continues to bring innovative ideas to the game elevating cornhole to its rightful place as a national sport with the implementation of the CornyForty and the development of the Cornhole Master Series. The ACO considers itself the steward of the sport. Game On!
