Brooklyn Singer Delights Canal Room Revelers
May 17, 2005 -- Brooklyn Singer-Songwriter Rick Cusick and his band ignited SoHo's Canal Room during a recent performance. The enthusiastic Friday night crowd was treated to songs from Rick's album "East", performed with a distinctly world-music flavor. The special night featured Mark Blackmon from Rick's songwriting project at the Bronx PrYde program performing on congas in his New York City debut.
Response to the show was unabashedly positive from long-time fans and first-time listeners. "A terrific set", chimed New Century Booking's Mike McHugh. "The band and the entire set were really tight." From the opening song, the story of "Michael O'Brien", the show combined the best elements of Rick's live performances - emotional and moving vocals, danceable grooves and rhythms, and inspired improvisation. The show included a medley of songs by Marvin Gaye, and finished with a rousing version of "Ride", with the audience singing along with Rick and the band.
