UK Sound Artist Philip Sanderson Releases New CD on Japan Record Label Seal Pool
May 30, 2005 -- As millions tune into American Idol and the Eurovision Song Contest to search for the musical stars of tomorrow, the people who are truly making innovative music, and have been for decades, continue to alter the world of music below most of the public's radar.
Some of the great music innovators such as Kraftwerk, Neu, Liquid Liquid, and Stockhausen have rightfully been recognized for their influence on modern music, but there are hundred more who have had their sounds influence today's music with little reference to them as a source.
Musicians such as Nurse With Wound, Merzbow, Throbbing Gristle and Organum created a whole genre of music, loosely referred to as "industrial music" which was the main influence on more popular musicians such as Sonic Youth, Nine Inch Nails, and Marilyn Manson. Early music by industrial musicians sounds almost mainstream now, twenty-five years from its inception.
Philip Sanderson (http://www.pipsand.co.uk/) was one of the pioneers in industrial music and released a series of seminal DIY audio tapes in the early 80s under the name "Snatch Tapes" (http://www.psouper.co.uk/snatch/index.html). The tapes featured iconoclasts such as Lemon Kittens, David Jackman of Organum and Philip Sanderson's own Storm Bugs project.
The "Seal Pool Sounds" CD picks up where Sanderson's Storm Bugs project left off sometime in 1981. Whereas today's artists focus on vocals and rhythm, Sanderson has always used DIY software and electronics to conjure whimsical, plaintive electronic tones with minimum rhythms, and has avoided the need for vocals altogether.
The "Seal Pool Sounds" CD at once evokes the Los Angeles Free Music Society, Raymond Scott, Marcel Duchamp, and French New Wave film music, and will doubtless be heard influencing popular music of the next decade.
Seal Pool is a Japan-based label whose releases are inspired by chance encounters, found objects and recurring dreams. Seal Pool's first CD was Jonathan Coleclough and Tim Hill - "Beech For John and Miho"
