Record Label Using Artificial Intelligence to Predict Hits
rhythmiQ records enters the music industry without an A&R department, but with an artificial intelligence, or A.I., that accurately measures the "hit potential" of the songs that it listens to.
It took two years of research and development to build the A.I. and give it a purpose: figure out why, from 1995 through 2004, only 902 songs made it to the top 20 and only 119 songs made it to #1. Three weeks later, the A.I. came back with an answer.
That answer was that hit songs, regardless of genre, contained similar qualities that appeal to a broad audience. What followed was another year of measuring the accuracy of the A.I. when it looked for those qualities in songs that it had never heard before. As new songs were released, they were presented to the A.I., and its answer was compared to the highest chart position that the song achieved.
"This technology enables us to avoid the hit-and-miss approach of flooding the market with hundreds of albums in the hopes that one or two make it big," said Michael D. Meadows, C.E.O. of rhythmiQ records. "We have the luxury of focusing our energy on a few projects that we know are going to make it big."
When asked about how artists feel about the A.I., Meadows responded, "We give artists all the creative latitude in the world. The A.I. simply helps us determine which songs to market and promote more aggressively."
