Grub Dog and the Modestos at Momos Tuesdays in July
No one stands out from Momo's packed calendar of alt-country acts more than the incendiary Grub Dog and the Modestos, a roots-rock explosion fronted by Austin songwriter Grub Dog Mitchell. On Tuesday nights in July (8:PM), Grub and his gang deliver 90 minutes of compelling songs showcased by sizzling rock and roll musicality. With his feet firmly planted in the footsteps of the Replacements' Paul Westerberg and X's John Doe, you might think Grub an unusual choice of songwriter for Momo's red-tableclothed lounge but these are songs worth treating to a special evening.
The sound is dusted over with a rootsy veneer that comes straight out of Grub's upbringing in the tiny Central California town of Greenfield, population 2000. His father was (and still is) a bassist in a country cover band, his mother a worker in an onion processing factory. Yet, despite these humble roots, Grub's electric delivery puts the punk back in alt.country ala Bottle Rockets, early Wilco and Texas's own defunct darlings Slobberbone.
The band reaches rock heights with driving sardonic ballads like "How Are You" and then brings in the fun with boot-stomping numbers like "808." For the ladies (to quote Redd Volkhart), Grub always throws in a love song or two like "Jason Leigh" or "Full of the Moon." All of it is brought together by the thrilling tones of good ole American rock-and-roll guitar and Grub's authenticly raw vocals.
If there is any night you're going to head off the beaten Strip for an early-week show, make it this one.
