Following the OVK report, today more than 40 million people in Germany aged over 14 years are online. Within the core online advertising target audience between 14 and 49 years old, 84.5 percent use the Internet, a total of 31.12 million people. In Europe, Germany is the leading country when it comes to the number of Internet users (53 million), followed by the UK (40 million) and France (35 million).
"Germany is number 1 in Europe in terms of Internet usage and market reach, and number 2, just behind the UK, when it comes to total online advertising spends," said Alexander Felsenberg,
Director Trade fairs New Media from IGEDO Company, the trade fair organizer for ONLINE MARKETING DSSELDORF. "It is the logical continuation of the overall positive trend that Germany will
soon become Europe's top market for online marketing and advertising."
The latest report on online advertising spend in Europe published by the Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe (IAB Europe ) on 2 June 2008 showed that "online advertising continues to
grow at a fast pace, experiencing an average growth rate of 40% year-on-year across the 16 countries covered in the report". In 2007 the European online advertising market was worth 11.2
billion, up four billion Euros from 7.2 billion in 2006.
The study compiled by IAB Europe and then processed and analysed by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), also showed that in 2007 the Top-3 markets together (Germany, the UK and France)
contributed 65% or 7.3 billion of the total European online advertising spend. Nicki Lynas, Senior Manager at PwC said: "The development of the more mature markets in Europe is a sign
that they are seeing increasing amounts of investment from a wider range of advertisers than ever before."
It also revealed that the share of online advertising spend related to the total advertising spend in key markets was growing: German companies for example were spending 11.6% of their
total advertising spend in online media, with an upward tendency for the next years.
Market growth and potential attracts European companies to invest and do business in Germany
With a GDP of 2,423 billion in 2007, Germany contributes 27 percent to the GDP of the Euro zone. Following a survey of the Deutsche Bundesbank , in 2006, 9,600 foreign companies employed
approximately 2.2 million people, and made direct investments of 439 billion in Germany.
Dutch companies seem to be the forerunners in Europe when it comes to investing and doing business in Germany; however, these figures are partly influenced by the fact that certain
American companies invest in Germany through their Dutch subsidiaries. Companies from the UK and France are the second and third largest European investors in Germany.
