Is Your Business an Energy Star See How Your Data Center Measures Up

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity, is teaming up with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other industry partners to build a ratings system to help companies minimize data center energy consumption.

News Facts:

- An ENERGY STAR Data Center Infrastructure Rating (http://www.energystar.gov/datacenters) will be similar to the EPA's ENERGY STAR ratings programs for facilities in several other industries.

- The deadline to submit an expression of interest to the EPA is June 1, 2008. Participants must collect 12 consecutive months of IT and building energy-use data, and submit the information to the EPA by June 1, 2009.

- The EPA and Emerson are hoping that at least 100 businesses sign up for the program within the next month. Data centers of at least 1,000 square feet are desired. The information will be masked, untraceable to any particular company, and will not be otherwise released.

- Energy consumption doubled at the nation's data center s between 2000 and 2006, and government statistics predict it to double again by 2011.

- A fall 2007 Data Center Users' Group (DCUG) survey, conducted by Emerson, reports 79 percent of IT professionals believe improving the energy efficiency of their company's data center is important. However, only 17 percent of respondents have a documented strategy for reducing energy use.

- According to Emerson Network Power's Energy Logic roadmap (http://www.liebert.com/common/ViewDocument.aspxid=880), a cascade effect starting with one Watt saved at the processor level can save an average total of 2.84 Watts in energy consumption.

- Emerson Network Power has set up a special Web site for companies to locate all program information: www.emersonnetworkpower.com/energystar.

Attributable Quotes to Jack Pouchet, director of energy initiatives, Emerson Network Power:

- "We believe that data center s, like automobiles, should consume energy in a way that operators can understand--just as we understand vehicles' consumption by measuring miles per gallon."

- "Our customers are telling us that efficiency is a top priority, yet at the same time, a difficult concept to measure."

- "We believe that a data center energy standard should be based on what is actually occurring in facilities today because organizations are not able to improve what they don't measure."

- "As the leading provider of data center infrastructure technologies, we at Emerson will reach out to our customers to encourage their involvement in this important initiative."

Attributable Quote to Mike Zatz, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:

- "We are delighted to see a market leader such as Emerson supporting our efforts to build this critical knowledge base of data center energy consumption. We look forward to Emerson's continued support as we work to build an ENERGY STAR classification for data center s."
