Network Operators Increasingly Turn to Focused Management Solutions to Operate TriplePlay Voice Video and Data Services

May 5, 2005 -- Operators of carrier, service provider, cable, and enterprise networks will increasingly turn to focused solutions to help them manage the quality and reliability of their converged, triple-play voice, video, and data service offerings as opposed to using either existing tools or developing their own.

This is just one of the findings from a poll of almost 150 participants in a Light Reading Webinar, "Optimizing Triple-Play Service Quality," sponsored by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) performance management and service assurance vendor Brix Networks (www.brixnet.com).

In response to the question, "How are network operators going to manage their triple-play services," more than one-third of the respondents (34 percent) indicated they believe operators will overwhelmingly purchase dedicated management products for this important task, versus either building their own solution (seven percent) or using a legacy tool from their current network management vendor (six percent).

Additionally, 29 percent felt that network operators would leave the management of triple-play services up to their infrastructure vendor (Cisco, Juniper, Nortel, Sonus, etc.), while roughly a quarter of those polled (24 percent) believe operators will outsource this function to third-party technology services firms, like Accenture, EDS, or IBM Global Services.

"Providers are eager to offer subscribers new, revenue-generating services that provide value and increase customer retention," said Graham Beniston, analyst-at-large at Heavy Reading, Light Reading's research division, and the moderator of this Webinar. "The results of this poll suggest that there are very real opportunities for companies such as Brix to vault into strong leadership positions by offering triple-play management solutions to network operators -- both on their own, and in partnership with the infrastructure vendors and major system integrators."

"What we see by these findings is that we are on the verge of a disruptive change in the network management market whereby the largest telcos, cable companies, and operators of enterprise networks are neither looking to their incumbent vendors for help with managing their converged services, nor will they bother to try and build it themselves," said Tom Pincince, president and CEO of Brix Networks. "Instead, they are going to buy proven, focused solutions from a company like ours that has significant competencies in VoIP and IP video assurance. And from out of this disruption will be the creation of an all-new market, a market we intend to dominate and be the category leader."

Other highlights from the Light Reading "Optimizing Triple-Play Service Quality" Webinar poll included the results to another question, "Which of the triple-play services -- voice, video, data, or the interplay between the three -- is the most important Almost two-thirds (63 percent) of the respondents replied that the interplay between all three was most important, followed by video (22 percent), voice (nine percent), and data (six percent).
