Radionet Extends Fault Tolerant Mobile Broadband to Heavy Industry Moving Vehicles

May 20, 2005 -- Radionet Ltd, a leading supplier of Wireless Hotzone technology, today launched a new wireless solution for heavy-duty industrial environments such as mines, tunnels, ports and container terminals and other connection critical applications for organizations such as police or fire brigades. With its innovative redundant network connections and ruggedized design, the Radionet RN-1000 solution brings high availability, continuous connection for moving vehicles at speeds of up to 54 Mbps. In the most demanding industrial environments, the RN-1000 solution enables wholly new applications such as live video streams from surveillance cameras and control data for moving vehicles.

The RN-1000 series provides high security and bandwidth for industrial logistics solutions and linking mobile vehicles, container handling equipment, and industrial machinery to information systems.

"This is a ground-breaking solution for connection critical environments where mobility or automation of vehicles and machines needs to be supported. By combining standards based technology, ruggedized design and Radionet's mobility innovations, the solution enables secured connections in even in the harshest of environments such as deep mine shafts, oil fields or outdoor port environments," said Markus Bjrkqvist, VP Sales and Marketing, Radionet. "The solution is based on direct customer requirements addressing the need for high throughput wireless connections in industrial environments in a cost-effective and secure way."

The RN-1000 solution is based on worldwide standards featuring several key innovations. First, the solution provides mobility with zero-delay "fault tolerant" connection handovers. The system proactively scans for available network connections, allowing uninterrupted network connection even in moving vehicles. Second, the solution features two redundant radio units, so that if one connection fails, the system will not lose its connection to the network.

The solution is designed for the most demanding of environments, features a bulletproof steel casing and passes the rigorous IP66 industrial standard tests - which in practice means that the enclosure is fully dust resistant and can operate even if directly drenched with water. The solution can also withstand extreme temperatures from -40ºC to +70ºC.

The solution is composed of three components: the wireless access point, the mobile terminal and the terminal server to control the whole solution. The solution utilizes external sectorised antennas designed specifically to meet the needs of industrial applications.
