Controversial Author Claudette Milner will read excerpts of her book "Children of Plains Estates" at the Stanley County Author Fair on August 4, 2005. In a recent interview on VoiceAmerica.com Milner explains why this event is so close to her heart. She later goes on to make the following statement:

"This event will give me an opportunuity to meet and talk with children. The ability to read is fundamental to the education of our children. It is the foundation of our children's success. It can be compared to building a new house without a foundation to sustain it. Without an education our children do not have the tools to build a strong foundation for their life.

I am saddened when I see a child with $100 dollar sneakers but is illiterate. Our young parents must be taught the value of education over video games and expensive clothes. It is up to us as a community to bring projects into the library that will encourage all children to read.

For every child that reads Harry Potter there are thousands that have never even bought a book or been given one to read. I encourage parents to give the gift of reading to each child. Money is not issue. Every town has a library. Spend at least one day a week there with your child. Teach them the importance of reading by showing them that you value education. We can turn this epidemic around one book at a time."

Children of Plains Estates" is a book of inclusiveness. It crosses racial and economic lines of division. Its goal is to bring light to the struggles and victories of children. My goal is to break down the barriers that separate us by forcing the reader to confront their own stereotypes and bigotries. Aids, racism, child molestation, drugs, alcoholism, domestic violence, are not issues that happen to other people. They are issues that affect all of us. The purpose of this book is to begin the dialogue in order to confront the issues.

Stanley County Author Fair will be held at the Stanley County Public Library, located at 133 East Main Street Albermarle, N.C. Panel discussion from 5:00-5:30 pm; short readings will be from 5:30-6:00 pm with book signings from 6:00-6:30.
