Nebraska Parents at Increased Risk of Identity Theft
A hacker has broken into the State of Nebraska'ss Child Support computer system. Although State Treasurer Ron Ross made a public statement regarding this matter, more needs to be done to protect the information of parents who are paying and receiving child-support through the State of Nebraska.
Surprisingly, the states computer systems are actually the least of the problem for Nebraska parents. The state prints the full social security numbers and addresses of all obligors on monthly statements. This information is sent by regular mail to tens of thousands of people each month. Over two years ago Fathers's Rights of Nebraska (a Nebraska 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization) asked the state to stop sending such sensitive information in the mail. So far the organizations requests have been ignored.
It would be a great help if the state and the treasurers office in particular would show even the slightest interest in protecting the privacy of so many of the citizens of this state.
